Hello, Jeff, from another Jeff!

The Nextel 9-pin cable gives you the most options, because it can be plugged into just about any tracker, from a TNC-only to a full onboard computer. The disadvantage, though, is if your computer only has one serial port... and it's attached to the TNC.

If you have a TNC that has a second serial port, such as the Kantronics KPC-3 Plus or PacComm PicoPacket, you can plug the phone into the second "GPS" port, then use just one serial port on your laptop or other computer to run APRS, being fed by the GPS through the TNC. You will also want a car charger for the phone - running the GPS continuously drains the phones battery at about 4 times the normal rate. It's enough extra drain that the charger provides only slightly more current than the phone uses, so it does not charge very quickly with the GPS running.

Have fun!
