I noticed a number of stations in our area are transmitting HID packets. Here is an example captured by Ui-View:
KA9HRO>ID,W9AZ-15*,WIDE,WIDE-3 <UI>:
KA9HRO/R RELAY/D KA9HRO-1/B
KA9HRO>ID,W9AZ-15,WB9WOZ-15*,WIDE-3 <UI>:
KA9HRO/R RELAY/D KA9HRO-1/B
KA9HRO>ID,W9AZ-15,KC9DJM-12*,WIDE-3 <UI>:
KA9HRO/R RELAY/D KA9HRO-1/B
These packets could have propagated further, but notice the WIDE-3. As it is, I see three copies of an ID packet from this station.
Users are usually completely unaware HID is ON. According to posts on the TAPR APRSSig, the D700 will send it in some modes. We should encourage all users to set HID OFF.

You've touched upon a pet peeve of mine, Bill... and one of my long-standing arguments with Bob Bruninga.
Yes, HID should be OFF on all APRS stations. However, one of the settings Bob insists upon for Kantronics WIDEn-n digis is that they NOT send their ID with WIDEn-n packets (UIFLOOD NOID), because it breaks his Vicinity Tracking(tm) feature of DOS APRS. Clearly, if a Kantronics TNC has UIFLOOD ID turned on, VT is broken... but so many other things can break it, too.
The side effect is that these digipeaters are no longer sending an FCC-acceptable ID with each digipeated packet, so they must fall back to some other method of identifying themselves every ten minutes.
The simplest is HID ON, because it will list all aliases the digi responds to in its packet, and it will be sent within the legal limits. The more useful way is to use beacon packets, but too many of those are worse than the HID packets, because they're longer.
The least offensive (to me) compromise is that the Kantronics digis use the LText buffers and varying LTPath and BLT timer settings. Every ten minutes, to stay within legalities and to keep the local net up-to-date on your position, the digi should send its position with NO PATH, or, at most, one hop. Other intervals can be used to send the SAME beacon (to avoid problems for DOS APRS users) to longer paths. Signed Jeff Brenton KA9VNV

WIDE-3 doesn't mean anything... If it had been WIDE3-3, however, it would have meant 3 additional hops out from the origin, for a total of 5... Increasing the number of people losing bandwidth to the unnecessary packet several times. |

New to the area, and ust got the radio back in the truck after being overseas for 6 years, and back in the states finally! Two questions, is HID "ON" on a TM-D700 in APRS mode? and if so how can you turn it off.
Looking forward to getting back into Amateur Radio!!

HID may or may not be on in the D700, but, unless it is running as a digipeater, it won't be a factor.
HID is the TNC's way of making sure its transmissions are identified. All transmissions that originate at the TNC have your ID on them. Packets that are digipeated always have the source and destination calls, but certain digipeating settings will have the TNC not insert its own call in the middle. When this happens, a HID packet is generated within 10 minutes, unless HID is off.
But, a HID packet from a mobile has less effect upon the net than one from a WIDE, so I wouldn't worry about it. |
