With WinARPS, can I connect a GPS to a second serial (com) port on my PC and use the first for the TNC or do I have to use the KPC3+ software serial port and a splitter cable for proper APRS operation. |

Well, I went out and bought a GPS today and connected it via the other serial port on my PC. It seems to be working ok. I picked up the Etrex Vista by Garmin. Finally this morning I was able to see a couple of stations on my WinARPS screen - couldn't see any yesterday after I installed it so I was not sure if it was even working. Now the next obstical I have to overcome is setting up WinARPS so I can transmit the right info. |

How you hook it up depends upon what you want to do. Using the computer's second serial port gives WinAPRS more information than using the KPC's second port, because WinAPRS only polls the TNC once per minute (at 55 seconds into the minute, if you care).
However, using the GPS attached to the TNC's second port allows you to run the tracker without WinAPRS... See my KPC-3 Plus Tracker page for more information on this option.
(this is how I've run my trackers since the KPC-3 Plus gained the second serial port) |
