Let's say you have decided you want to use UIView for your APRS client. What do you need to make it work?

UIView is a bit archaic, being from 2002, and most of the things that make it "modern" come from its ability to use add-ons. Setting it up with these add-ons, though, can be a bit of a bitch.

Anyway, here's the website for downloading UIView itself, and explanations of what it is:

http://www.ui-view.org/

I would proactively register for the 32-bit version, because the 16-bit version isn't particularly useful on modern hardware, compared with the 32-bit, because it doesn't support things like USB serial ports very well. That registration is done here:

http://www.apritch.myby.co.uk/uiv32.htm

You'll have to go back a day or so later, and click the "Previously Registered" button to pick up your registration information.

There are multiple "Map Server" packages for UIView; One, which uses PMAP7 as the source of maps, is linked to on the ui-view.org website. One that uses web-based (Microsoft, in this case) maps can be found here:

http://www.pa7rhm.nl/downloads/setup_pa7rhmsvr1010.exe (the program)
http://www.pa7rhm.nl/downloads/PA7RHMsvr.html (documentation)
http://www.pa7rhm.nl/downloads/ (other UIView-related stuff)

Setting up use of APRS server network takes a bit of text manipulations, but you can limit the area for inbound data, which cuts down on the traffic. A good explanation of how to set it up can be found here:

http://www.w9win.org/filter.php

I'm sure others will pipe up with other suggestions for tweaking things. These, I think, are the "minimum" you need to get started.

I use(d) the filter wizard available at http://www.apritch.myby.co.uk/addon_misc.htm then all you do is cut and paste into UiView..

I'm a huge fan of the PA7HRM map server..the only draw back is you need internet connectivity.
