This is to let everyone know that an ongoing problem has reared its ugly head again. This time, if it does not clear itself up quickly, I'm going to squash it.... This is not necessarily something that happened on this board, but it affects all boards hosted here, so I'm posting this message "everywhere".
It seems that someone has told AOL that a message a board sent them to notify them of a new private message or board reply was "Spam". AOL has now decided that ALL mail from ALL boards is "Spam", and will not accept it. That effectively means no one with an AOL or NETSCAPE address will get reply or private message notifications until such time as AOL decides we've been "punished enough" for this infraction. They will, however, consider adding our server to a "special list" to be accepted, should we be interested in paying them a fee to ignore user complaints.
Note that this is a separate issue from the problem that most BBS software has had with AOL in the past, where they consider the links to your PM box or the messages you're watching to be "too spam-like", and stop accepting them at random intervals. They've actually gotten much better about this one in the past 6 months.
In any case, if it continues on more than a day or two, we will block addresses from AOL.COM or NETSCAPE.COM/NET from registering, and will disable the notification features for those here that are currently using those domains for addresses. IF that should become necessary, I'll update this topic. |
