I'm contemplating resurecting N9MXQ-15 as a wide digi. I am, however, taking a differant approach this time.
The site has full time internet access via cable and I'd like the DIGI to act as at least a way to report positions to the APRS network on the net.
Which OS does everyone recommend? Windoze? Linux (which flavor)? What program would be best for this project?
The computer I've set aside for this is a P3 500MHz with a 9g hard drive and 128 meg of ram. I'd like to run the TNC in KISS mode.
Any and all input, pro and con will be greatly appreciated. Signed Gene Young N9MXQ

It's simplex, Gene, same as the output!
OK, recommendations. The Windows software is certainly easier to set up. But, at 500MHz and 128MB RAM, the versions of Windows that will be "safest" on the net (NT, 2000, XP) aren't going to be happy. There is no easy way to secure Windows prior to 2K/XP against the crap that's being done on internet, short of putting a hardware firewall between the box and the net.
If you intend to do that, and use "pinhole" NAT (map specific ports through to the windows box), any version of Windows that will run the software you chose should do fine.
That said, I'd go the Linux route. Not sure which version I'd recommend, although the ability to use Debian's apt-get system for the various packages you'll need (which don't happen to be available as RPMs very often) may offset the reputation Debian has for "hard to install".
For "friendly", Mandriva (I hate that name!) is my choice. Tried several others, but I keep coming back to Mandrake/Mandriva, because it is easy to find things I need, most of the time. But I keep copies of most major install disks at the office, including Slackware, Fedora, Kubuntu/Ubuntu, Gentoo (knuckle-scraping install of JUST what your system needs, compiled to be optimized for your hardware, once you figure out how), plus some "live CD" versions.
I'm seriously out of the loop on which packages are "best" right now. I was going to put an aprsd server up here in Woodstock on the DSL, but I didn't want to completely saturate my bandwidth. Maybe if I shut down the bittorrents for Mandriva it wouldn't be a problem... |

I wasn't planing on operating as a server so doing the pinhole isn't necessary. I just want a wide digi that reports what it hears to the network.
I'm poking around with UIView right now.. So I'll see if I like it or not. Signed Gene Young N9MXQ

UIView32 should handle that, no problem. |

Findu says you've got WIDE3-3 working, so it must be so! |

Hopefully in the near future N9MXQ-15 will be back in operation, I'm just waiting on a radio/PSU to be brought back to me...
I will be running UIView32 and echoing to the aprs server. I'm not sure I'll gate from the internet to rf, will have to wait and see. Signed Gene Young N9MXQ

N9MXQ-15 is up and running. Although I can't see it on FINDU, and I don't have a home station up at this time.. It's up.. And I hope it's digi'ing correctly..
Any signal reports appreciated.. Right now it's running 25 watts. When I get the other rig back it'll jump to 50 watts. Signed Gene Young N9MXQ

There hasn't been any raw data reaching Findu in 8 days.. I would suggest you check your UNPROTO path. I don't think you can hit me direct so I cannot tell what your issue is.. I will be watching, and I will turn an 11 el beam out to your qth... Good luck.

Ok, sorry about that!! I looked only for N9MXQ, Didn't catch I forgot the SSID.
YOur UNPROTO is bad! No one should be using WIDE or RELAY . I would try WIDE2-2, or IL2-2 since you're so close to the Wisc border. Maybe, if you can not reach a WIDEn-N or direct, then maybe a WIDE1-1,WIDE2-2 would be better for initial try. Then play around and see what works best for your area out there. Glad to see you putting something on line out there! It can be used for sure!

Thought I had it for wide1-1.. guess I goofed it.. Will fix that next time I get out there..
I had a wide out there before and it covered wonderfully, I took it down due to lack of interest on my part and sold off the equipment.. I recently decided to ressurect it.. I just wish there was more coverage out to the west of here. Signed Gene Young N9MXQ

have changed some settings, and although I'm seeing it on FINDU it doesn't seem to be transmitting digi'd packets.
I'll try a radio change this weekend if it doesn't improve.. Didn't want to give up my mobile, but if the one out there isn't working.... Signed Gene Young N9MXQ

Think I have the radio out there working correctly. Had to get the txd right..
It's runnin UIView32, and is set to act as a WIDEn-n and ILn-n.
It's set to beacon to APRS v WIDE2-2..
Think that should do it... Signed Gene Young N9MXQ
