According to my own ALOHA measurements, my traffic range is 60 to 100 miles, although the entire state of Illinois is my area of interest.
Just wondering, why would anyone gate WX from the Internet from storms more than, say 300 miles, from their station?
I just don't understand the point of this, unless it is a hurricane. Of course, mesocyclones must be of great interest to some, but if no direction and speed of storm is entered, it is kind of pointless to get weather from 5 states away.
Can someone explain the point of this gating from such a great distance?

Wednesday, I pulled up the seven-day forecast for Woodstock, IL. It had "Hurricane force winds" predicted for 5 of the 7 days...
Of course, someone at NOAA must have caught it, because the page was fixed to "blustery" five minutes later. |

Sure can Pat.
It's called sloppy set up.
There are a number of I-Gates that are what seem to be "wide open".
Some of us have talked about this off line, and some of us have talked to the sysops to help them correct it.
My station Gates all SVR WX from the NWS for Northern IL specifically.
It takes time and the understanding of how WX msg's leave the NWS and how to set up UIV to do this properly.
I also TX these NWS WX bullitens to a path of LCWX2-1
I do this to hold down the QRM on the freq.
SO the WX bull stays in some what a close proximity in Lake Counny.
I have 3 "fill in digi's" set to digipeat LCWX. Most if not all of the Lake County APRS stations running UI-NWS and just RF then gets the codes to light up and honk their stations.
